Going Solo in Japan

Posted by on

When I arrived in New York in the early 90’s, I had my first encounter with an amazing box called The Answering Machine. Back in Sydney, our social lives relied on someone being at home to answer the phone. Mobile phones were around but they were about the size of your average brick. It really doesn’t seem that long ago.

So in 2015, when renowned japanese art dealer Rocky Degawa discovered my art via the phone app instagram, it seemed incredible. I was still pinching myself when he flew out to meet me at my studio to talk turkey. I have been exhibiting regularly throughout Japan ever since.

This February, Rocky staged the largest solo exhibition of my work in Japan to date, at the prestigious Bunkamura Gallery in Shibuya Tokyo. It was decided I should fly over for a week, meet Rocky’s staff, meet some art collectors in person and give an artist talk. I enjoyed Japan immensely and Rocky had done the most incredible curation and presentation of my work. This is so gratifying after arduous solitary months producing 34 paintings and 2 sculptures.
